Ned was sitting on a couch in the waiting room. She felt a tiny stab of pain as she strode over and sat down next to him.
"Ned, we’ve got to talk," she said. "What’s happening?"
"Oh, boy—"
"Ned, I’m not leaving until I’ve heard it all."
"I—"
"If you’re hoping they’ll call you in for your cleaning, forget it. I’ll be here when you’re done."
"It’s not that," he said. "There’s plenty of time because they can’t find my records. I just don’t know where to start!"
"Okay, then, how about a question to get you going?"
He nodded.
Nancy took a deep breath. Might as well start off with the biggie, she thought. “Do you love her?” she asked.
A look of horror crossed Ned’s face. “Love her! No way! Nancy, Jessica is a cold, calculating opportunist. That’s the reason I asked her to marry me!”
