Nancy’s temples began to throb. Rubbing them, she said, “I don’t get it. Are you saying she’s blackmailing you?”
"Maybe I’d better start from the beginning."
"The first time she mentioned marriage, I was stunned," he said to Nancy. "I mean, she knew all about you and me. But I couldn’t convince her that I was serious about you."
"Maybe you didn’t try hard enough," Nancy said curtly.
"Oh, but I did. Jessica’s smart, though. Every time I started talking about you she changed the subject. After a while I gave up, and then she really got into gear.”
"Well, for instance, she constantly talked about our future together, as if it was already settled that we’d get married. And she came on to me physically in a very big way."
Nancy tensed up. She wasn’t sure she wanted to hear about that. Nevertheless she asked, “So what happened?”
"Not what you think," Ned said with a grin. "I did get suspicious. Jessica was trying hard to land me. Too hard.”
"So? Maybe she fell in love with you," Nancy said.
"I don’t think so. She acts as if she loves me, but she’s only pretending."
